The Char 2C is a bit of a “what-if” tank for the Vespers War,
since the development program for it was initiated in 1916 but the
vehicles weren’t completed until 1921 (or 1923, depending on if one
includes the immediate modifications of the tanks after initial
delivery). Part of the delay was intentional; General Petain wanted
them canceled until Colonel Estienne, head of tank development,
reminded him that the delivery of Anglo-American Liberty tanks to the
French was contingent on them developing their own heavy tank. In
order to comply with the letter of that agreement, development was
deliberately stretched out as long as possible. Once the war ended,
10 were completed to use up excess capacity in heavy manufacturing
factories.

The Char 2C introduced the 3-crew turret, with a gunner, loader, and
commander all in the main turret, which was fitted with a shortened
75mm Mle 1897, although not nearly as short as the stubby Blockhaus
Schneider. A second turret at the rear of the tank held a Hotchkiss
machinegun. Three more machineguns were fitted in the hull in ball
mountings, one at the bow and the others at the front corners of the
tank in angled faceplates, allowing fire forward or to the side. A
pair of petrol engines powered electric motors, all in the middle of
the tank with a passageway between them linking the two fighting
compartments.

A path to an
alternate history where this sees service in the First World War is a
little harder than usual, since the French high command wanted to
cancel it and only pressure from the UK and US kept it in development
long enough to be produced after the war. The easiest way is likely
for someone other than Petain to be in charge, for the war to last
into 1919, and for there to be an apparent need for a tank that can
assault heavy defenses. That’s a pretty hefty set of requirements.

To help with this, I volunteered to pull together everything I could find that flew around the time of the game's setting, either with its last flight later than 1985 or its first flight earlier than 1995. I limited myself to rockets that could potentially launch at least a minimal Gemini-sized capsule, around 3.2 tonnes.

For most of these rockets, the tonnes to each orbit were calculated by taking their published payload to LEO, then using the formulas in Dark Conspiracy to calculate the other orbits. The exception are the Ariane rockets, which were used almost exclusively for GEO launches. Their payload numbers were based on starting with the GEO numbers and then applying the appropriate DC formula. Costs were taken from whatever data was available and then converted to 1991 dollars using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation calculator. The only exception is the Soyuz-U2, for which I could not find numbers. I made it slightly more expensive than the Soyuz-U because of its use of the pricey synthetic kerosene syntin.

Each rocket's name is a link to its Wikipedia page for those wanting more information.

China: It may be worth noting in passing that China's rockets were considered for commercial launches from the loss of Challenger in 1986 up until ITAR violations around the failure analysis of the Apstar 2 Long March 2E and Intelsat 708 Long March 3B in 1995 and 1996 respectively led to satellites with US technology being returned to the Munitions List and prohibited from launching on Chinese rockets. In a DC parallel timeline, these events may not have happened and Chinese rockets may see more commercial use. Chinese rockets at this time are generally unreliable when compared to modern Chinese rockets or most contemporary non-Chinese rockets and, like the Zenit, should be treated as poorly maintained.

Ariane: These are ESA rockets, which technically is not the same group of countries as the EU. I simplified a bit. Anyone wanting more accuracy can pull a list of ESA-participating countries.

For all of the rockets, Reentry, Transfer, Crew, and Duration are 0.
Everything about these programs could change tomorrow. With that caveat in place, let's dive in to two new robotic vehicles.

The Robotic Combat Vehicle program is intended to provide scouts, light combat vehicles, and "wingmen" for armored vehicle crews. The first two of these are in the prototype phase now (2021). The current prototypes require two remote crew, a driver and gunner. The stated goal is to reduce the driver's input over time to just combat situations, with the vehicle having an on-board driving system to get it from the reserves to its deployment area, at which point the driver will take over. The gunner is expected to always be in the loop, with the on-board electronics having no ability to make a fire decision.

The Robotic Combat Vehicle-Light (RCV-L) is intended as a scout, with 2 being transportable by V-22 Osprey or CH-47 Chinook. The base vehicle is 6,800 pounds and can carry 7,200 pounds of equipment, mostly mounted on a large flat deck. The standard expected equipment is a Kongsberg CROWS II (RS4) Remote Weapon Station, fitted with an M-240 7.62mm machine gun and a single Javelin anti-tank guided missile. It also has a tethered Hoverfly drone for enhanced spotting capabilities. Most of the vehicle is lightly armored, with only the "brains" (computers and some sensors) armored to be proof against 7.62mm strikes. It's considered "attritable" (i.e. losses are acceptable), and it's felt it can be useful as a sensor post even if it loses mobility and weapons use.

The Robotic Combat Vehicle Medium (RCV-M) is a larger vehicle intended to engage opposing light vehicles, with 1 being transportable by a C-130 Hercules. At around 21,000 pounds, it's a bit beefier than the RCV-L. It carries a Kongsberg MCT-30 (RT40) turret, which is expected to be fitted with a Bushmaster II 30mm autocannon, a pair of Javelin ATGMs, and (in my opinion) probably a coaxial M-240 machine gun. The autocannon has 2 independent 75 round ammunition bins that it can select from for flexibility. In addition to a tethered R80D SkyRaider drone, it also carries an SVGV ground drone for scouting. The SVGV is a 30 pound drone capable of a top speed of 10 kilometers per hour with a ~6 hour endurance, capable of going places the RCV-M won't fit.

Both vehicles have parenthetical armor values for their hull. The former value is used for most hits, while the latter is used if the "crew" would be injured. As an alternative if this is too complicated, use the parenthetical value for Hull hits and the lower value for Suspension hits.

For weapons stats, I recommend using Paul Mulcahy's pages on US Machine Guns for the M-240, US Autocannons for the Bushmaster II, and US ATGMs for the Javelin.

Speeds are a guess because numbers from the news articles are all over the place. They're hybrid vehicles, and the 72 hour endurance is from the program requirements because there's no information yet on fuel capacities or consumption.

While it was moderately fast and decently armored, its terrible ground clearance, massive bulk, and excessive crew meant it was a failure as a primary tank. So, they decided to build something smaller with the same main gun.
The tank that was selected was the Oberschlesien, a 19-tonne vehicle with a center-mounted main turret with the same 5.7cm gun as the A7V, with a full 360-degree field of fire. A pair of secondary turrets, each with a Maxim MG08, were mounted in front of and behind the main turret. Armor ranged from 14mm down to 10mm, and a 190 horsepower Argus engine transmitting power through a central drive sprocket was expected to give it a sprightly speed (for the time) of 16 kilometers per hour on road. Along with the Renault FT for the Entente, the Oberschlesien was a harbinger of tanks to come. However, this design came along too late to see service, with two prototypes partially complete at the time of the Armistice.

As such, they provide a good example of a "combat beast" when converted to Traveller.

As usual, let's see what we're starting with:

Those are some big physical stat bonuses, and they mean our Mordred starts out in MegaTraveller with a UPP of FCA665 per the conversion system. Life Force is 37, Determination is 16, and Experience is 12. The character will break Experience limits. I'd allow it, but GRELs shouldn't be allowed to take any career paths after their initial creation. They're programmed more than they're taught.

For skills, Athletics will provide us with a Physical boost, Combat Sense provides the Tactics skill, Dodge and Hand-to-Hand both provide Hand Combat, First Aid becomes Medical, Heavy Weapons is Heavy Weapons, Intimidate becomes Interrogation, Melee provides Blade Combat, Notice becomes Recon, Small Arms provides Gun Combat, Survival can be Recon, Survival, or Stealth, and Throwing provides Archaic Weapons.

For the Physical boost, I'll take +1 STR. All of the Hand Combat will go to Brawling. Blade Combat will be Small Blade, for daggers and knives. Gun Combat is Laser Weapons for fluff purposes (the faction that Mordreds come from use a battle laser as their primary small arm), and for Archaic Weapons I'm going to cheat and take another level of Small Blade. I forgot Archaic Weapons didn't actually have a throwing skill (and there's not really any skill directly applicable to throwing grenades). For Survival, since Notice already gave us Recon, I'll take Stealth.

That means our character is now GCA665, with Life Force 38, and skills of Brawling 4, Heavy Weapons 2, Interrogation 1, Laser Weapons 2, Medical 1, Recon 1, Small Blade 3, Stealth 1, and Tactics 2.

In TNE, again, all stats drop by one level, to FB9554. Wound thresholds are 18/72/48. All canon Mordred are male and would weigh 96 kilograms, but a female Mordred would be 81 kilograms. They can carry 72 kilograms as their normal load, and throw distance is 60 meters, so they can throw grenades better than most people can shoot. The Tactics 2 becomes a 1d6 Initiative.

Converting the Mordred's other skills, Brawling becomes Unarmed Martial Arts, Heavy Weapons has to be split among Grenade Launcher, Tac Missile, and Autogun, Interrogation remains Interrogation, Laser Weapons is split between Energy Weapons (Energy Pistol) and Energy Weapons (Energy Rifle), Medical has to have a specialty chosen from Diagnosis, Surgery, or Trauma Aid, Recon can be Stealth or Tracking, Small Blade becomes Armed Martial Arts (Small Blade), and Stealth remains Stealth. Based on the Heavy Gear fluff, I'll go with Tac Missile, Energy Rifle, Trauma Aid, and Tracking for the four that have choices. Also, I'm going to remove one level's worth of Small Blade and add it to Throwing Weapons to match the original Throwing skill, giving us a skill list of:
Armed Martial Arts (Small Blade) 4
Energy Weapon (Energy Rifle) 4
Interrogation 2
Medical (Trauma Aid) 2
Stealth 2
Tac Missile 4
Throwing Weapons 2
Tracking 2
Unarmed Martial Arts 8

Their unarmed damage is 12 (15 x 8, divided by 10). 30 skill levels is high, but they're very combat-oriented and can't provide much aid to a group outside of combat, and this is a complete character that cannot learn more skills.

The most common weapon for a Mordred is the BIL (Battlefield Infantry Laser), which is designed for power and reliability over penetration. It masses 3 kilos plus a 4 kilogram capacitor backpack and has ROF SA, Dam 8, Pen 2-2-3, BR 400, and Ammo 15. It also provides a +1 bonus to the shooter's Energy Rifle combat asset because the shot has effectively no travel time at battlefield ranges. GREL units typically have power generators right behind their lines to recharge the backpack capacitors. A GREL on their own will quickly run out of ammo.

Some Mordred will be programmed to use a machinegun (Autogun), anti-materiel rifle (Slug Rifle), infantry mortar (Heavy Artillery), or anti-armor rocket launcher (Tac Missile), but all are programmed to use the BIL.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17718188146918003275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121171500798653060.post-9016184141461151702019-03-14T23:11:00.001-04:002019-03-14T23:11:09.002-04:00Other Universes: Heavy Gear Traveller: The Private InvestigatorI was reminded recently that I had talked about providing examples of character conversion between Silhouette and Traveller. So, let's convert the Private Investigator (from DP9-101 Second Edition Heavy Gear Rulebook) to Mega and New Era.

So, what are we starting with?

Let's do MegaTraveller first, since that's the intermediary step to getting to New Era. Using the stat conversion system I wrote about last September, this character has a UPP of 777988. That's good for Life Force 21, Determination 16, and Experience 17.

The long list of skills provides this character with access to the Economic cascade, Tactics, Computer, Hand Combat cascade, either Tracked or Wheeled Vehicle, Interpersonal cascade, Forgery, Forensic, Legal, Recon, Gun Combat cascade, either Recon or Stealth, and Vice cascade.

From the Economic cascade, I go ahead and take Admin, since the PI will need to deal with cops. For both of the Hand Combat picks (one from Dodge and one from Hand-to-Hand), I go with Brawling. The Interpersonal pick is Interview (Liaison would also be a good choice). For Gun Combat, Handgun seems to fit the archetype the best. Since the character already has Recon, I pick Stealth when available, and the two Vice picks are split into a Bribery and a Streetwise, giving the following list of skills:
Admin 1, Brawling 2, Bribery 1, Computer 1, Forensic 2, Forgery 1, Interview 1, Handgun 1, Legal 1, Recon 2, Stealth 1, Streetwise 1, Tactics 1, Wheeled Vehicle 1.

For TNE, we'll use the MT stats to convert from. All core stats are reduced by 1, to a UPP of 666877. That give wound thresholds of 12/36/24, a mass of 80 kg for a male character and 65 kg for a female character, a load of 36 kg, and a throw distance of 24 meters.

Using Survival Margin, Admin and Legal combine into Admin/Legal, Brawling becomes Unarmed Martial Arts, Bribery and Computer convert over straight, Forensic becomes Investigation, Forgery and Interview convert straight, Handgun becomes Slug Weapon (Slug Pistol), Recon can convert to either Stealth or Tracking, Stealth and Streetwise convert straight, Tactics affects Initiative (see the skills post), and Wheeled Vehicle becomes Ground Vehicle (Wheeled). I'll put Recon to Tracking, since the character has Stealth, so TNE skills are:
Admin/Legal 3, Bribery 2, Computer 2, Forgery 2, Ground Vehicle (Wheeled) 2, Interview 2, Investigation 4, Slug Weapon (Slug Pistol) 2, Stealth 2, Streetwise 2, Tracking 4, Unarmed Martial Arts 4. They have Initiative 1d6-1 thanks to one level of Tactics, and unarmed damage is 2 based on Unarmed Martial Arts and Strength. With 29 skill levels, they're pretty highly skilled by TNE standards.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17718188146918003275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121171500798653060.post-57183614153404898982018-12-14T22:23:00.001-05:002018-12-14T22:23:31.763-05:00American Small Arms of WW1For people who are interested in the weapons of World War 1, one of the best pop culture sources I've found is C&Rsenal's YouTube channel,
where they discuss the history of the weapon and test it on range.
Watching through the series has led me to stat up the weapons they've
discussed, along with a few that get mentioned as being relevant but
that haven't had episodes shot yet. Below the break are the American weapons of the First World War. Please note that these
use Fire, Fusion & Steel calculations for Pen, rather than my revised penetration calculations.
The Lewis gun has 30% more range on a bipod.

The M1917 and M1903 use stripper clips.

The Krag uses a dump magazine. For game purposes, it functions identically to a stripper clip.

The Springfield Pedersen is a 1903 with the bolt switched out. It fires a pistol round from a magazine that sticks out to the top right of the rifle. In reality, it's extremely finicky to load, but an alternate war might see an improved design.

The two shotguns are equipped only with buckshot rounds. No slugs were sent overseas during the war.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17718188146918003275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121171500798653060.post-78313138206013285392018-12-14T22:16:00.003-05:002018-12-14T22:16:56.181-05:00Russian Small Arms of WW1For people who are interested in the weapons of World War 1, one of the best pop culture sources I've found is C&Rsenal's YouTube channel,

Only around 100 Avtomat were produced before the fall of the Russian Empire. It has a box magazine, but in practice only one magazine was issued to each gunner and they weren't interchangeable between guns. Their assistant was armed with an Arisaka rifle (see here) and the Arisaka clips were used with the Avtomat. An alternate war might see interchangeable magazines produced, in which case Mag would be 25 instead of 25c(5).

For people who are interested in the weapons of World War 1, one of the best pop culture sources I've found is C&Rsenal's YouTube channel,
where they discuss the history of the weapon and test it on range.
Watching through the series has led me to stat up the weapons they've
discussed, along with a few that get mentioned as being relevant but
that haven't had episodes shot yet. Below the break are the Portuguese weapons of the First World War. Please note that these
use Fire, Fusion & Steel calculations for Pen, rather than my revised penetration calculations.
Below the break are the French weapons of the First World War. Please note that these
use Fire, Fusion & Steel calculations for Pen, rather than my revised penetration calculations.
The Lewis gun has its range extended by 30% when on a bipod.

The Vickers has its range doubled when on a tripod.

All of the clip-fed weapons use stripper clips.
The Lee-Metford stats are for black powder rounds. Lee-Metfords with smokeless rounds should use the information for the Lee-Enfield. where they discuss the history of the weapon and test it on range.
Watching through the series has led me to stat up the weapons they've
discussed, along with a few that get mentioned as being relevant but
that haven't had episodes shot yet. Below the break are the Belgian weapons of the First World War. Please note that these
use Fire, Fusion & Steel calculations for Pen, rather than my revised penetration calculations.
For people who are interested in the weapons of World War 1, one of the best pop culture sources I've found is C&Rsenal's YouTube channel, where they discuss the history of the weapon and test it on range. Watching through the series has led me to stat up the weapons they've discussed, along with a few that get mentioned as being relevant but that haven't had episodes shot yet. Below the break are the Austro-Hungarian weapons of the First World War. Please note that these use Fire, Fusion & Steel calculations for Pen, rather than my revised penetration calculations.
All of the rifles except the Werndl-Holub feed from enbloc clips. The carbines do not have bayonet lugs, although there is an 1890 Gendarmerie Rifle that has the same stats as the M1890 Carbine and does have a bayonet lug.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17718188146918003275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121171500798653060.post-85116198708118174962018-12-02T19:43:00.000-05:002018-12-02T19:44:07.228-05:00The obscure firearms of World War IIn war, every country works on developing new weapons. Below are some
that didn't see significant service, either because they were weird
(the Thorneycroft), expensive (the Meunier), awkward (the
Chauchat-Ribeyrolles), uncomfortable to use (the MARS), or just too late
to enter service (the Annihilator, the MG 18 TuF, the RSC 1918). None
of these would have significant use in a simulation of the war, but
might be useful for games where the war lasts longer.
**** - the Huot only fires in automatic mode, but its slow rate of fire means a user can do 3-round bursts

The Annihilator was a prototype of what became the Thompson. They were about to be shipped to Europe when the war ended.

The RSC 1917 and RSC 1918 were semi-automatic rifles intended to replace the tube-loading Lebels and the older Berthiers that had 3-round magazines. Quite heavy, they were never adopted due to the end of the war.

The MG 18 TuF was a heavy machinegun using the same round as the T-Gewehr anti-tank rifle. Only a handful were built and only two are known to survive.

The Thorneycroft Bullpup Carbine was an early 20th-century attempt to shorten a service rifle by having a bolt-action bullpup. The magazine well slanted into the semi-pistol grip, which coincidentally eliminated any possibility of rimlock. They were rejected for being less accurate and having heavier recoil than the SMLE.

The Ribeyrolles 1918 was a very light machine gun / automatic rifle in the same vein as the Chauchat or BAR. The ammunition was made from a .351 Winchester case and 8mm Lebel bullet, hence my labeling it as Winchester-Lebel.

The Burton 1917 Light Machine Rifle is another of the automatic rifles. This one is unique in having a pair of 20-round magazines feeding from above, forming a V-shape that the shooter looks between when firing. Only one magazine feeds at a time, and it takes an action to switch between magazines. It was intended for aviation use, but was obsoleted before entering service when Lewis gun production caught up to shortages.

The Huot was an attempt to convert Ross rifles into light machine guns. A gas piston would work the bolt and feed ammunition from a drum magazine. It had no provision for semi-automatic fire, but did have a very slow firing rate. The drum magazine was filled from a long clip. The war ended before it could enter service.

The Meunier A6 was supposed to replace the Lebel just before war broke out. The rifle's form had been selected in 1910 and the final ammunition picked in 1913, just in time to not be tooled up in 1914. Only around 1,000 were built, since it was decided that switching to a new rifle and new ammunition in the middle of a war was a bad idea.

The Chauchat-Ribeyrolles 1918 is an awkward firearm to classify. It's long, awkward, and heavy for a submachinegun, but the lack of a stock means it suffers severe recoil from firing the full-size 8mm Lebel cartridge from a Chauchat magazine. It was a very early Personal Defense Weapon intended for tank crews.

The Luger 1906 is a toggle-lock rifle firing military Mauser ammunition. One prototype survives, serial number 4.

MARS pistols were very early and VERY large self-loading pistols. With barrels nearly twice the length of an M1911 and proportionately sized everything else, they're big. The 9mm ammunition is bottlenecked and is an extremely hot load for the time. When tested, the shooters went through one round of trials and refused to fire the gun again.

The General Liu Rifle isn't an official name, but it was a rifle designed by (surprise) General Liu. He had observed combat in World War 1 and felt China needed to modernize its army and produce its own arms. Because he was concerned about poor quality control, he designed a rifle that was semi-automatic, but could have its barrel band rotated to cut off the gas system and convert it to a bolt-action. This isn't modeled in its stats, but is interesting. Unfortunately, the General suffered a stroke while the machinery was in transit to China and was unable to push his rifle into production.

The Howell Automatic Rifle is a semi-automatic conversion of the SMLE. It used a gas trap and a curved cam to work the bolt in a system described by Ian McCollum as "a total kludge." At least one surviving rifle has a 20-round magazine, and they could presumably also use the SMLE's standard 10-round magazine.Stephenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17718188146918003275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1121171500798653060.post-51016749796349665872018-12-02T18:42:00.002-05:002018-12-02T18:42:53.678-05:00Small Arms notes - action and magazineThe rules for Twilight: 2000 ignore some methods of firing guns and means of loading/storing ammunition in the gun that were obsolete by the time of that game, but would still be in use during the Vespers War era. As such, here's a quick summary of types of action and types of magazine.

Actions are noted in the ROF column. A number is an automatic weapon, while letters are per the following section:

SS - Single Shot - This is a firearm that does not have a magazine. It fires one round per fire action and then must be reloaded. As much as possible, I'll note how the chamber is managed in a note.

BA - Bolt Action - This is a firearm that uses either a rotating bolt or a straight pull bolt. The shooter manipulates the bolt to open the chamber, extract the fired cartridge, and load an unfired cartridge in the chamber, with the bolt cocking the firing piece at some point in its motion. It fires one round per fire action, but does not need to be reloaded until its magazine is empty.

LA - Lever Action - This is a magazine-fed firearm that uses a lever under the trigger to work the bolt and chamber. Like a bolt action, it fires one round per fire action and only needs to be reloaded when the magazine is empty.

PA - Pump Action - This is also magazine-fed. It has a sliding handgrip under the barrel that's manipulated to work the action. It can fire up to three rounds per fire action.

SA - Semi-Automatic - This is the most common action nowadays, where gas from the fired round is used to cycle the action and eject the spent cartridge while loading a new one. It can fire up to five rounds per fire action.

SAR - Single Action Revolver - The earliest revolver type, where the hammer must be manually cocked for each shot. One round per fire action.

DAR - Double Action Revolver - An evolved revolver type where pulling the trigger first cocks the hammer and then releases it. Three rounds per fire action.

In addition to the action, the magazine is an important factor in a firearm's ease of use. Magazine types are noted in the Ammo column after the number of rounds contained.

(no suffix) - Box magazine - A detachable container of rounds that can be replaced swiftly by the user. For one action, the gun can be fully reloaded.

i - Individual - Rounds must be loaded one at a time, either because the gun is a single shot or because it has a magazine that can't be rapid-loaded, such as a tube magazine. Up to three rounds can be loaded in a single action.

R - Revolver - A firearm with a cylinder that holds the rounds and rotates to present them to the firing system. These are highly variable in their reload rate. With a speedloader, all rounds can be reloaded with one action. Without a speedloader, most revolvers can be reloaded at three rounds per action. Some older revolvers with awkward loading systems will be noted as Slow Reload, and they reload at two rounds per fire action.

B - Belt - Primarily a system for machine guns, this is a fabric belt or metal links holding the rounds together, pulled through the gun by its firing system. It requires two actions to load a new belt, though the gunner can be assisted by a second person to do it in a single round (using one action from each of them).

c(x) - Clip - On many late 19th-century and early 20th-century firearms, a fixed magazine was filled by clips, either a stripper clip (where the bullets were pushed from the clip into the magazine) or an en bloc clip (where the entire clip was loaded and the empty clip ejected once all the bullets were fired). The clip will load (x) rounds per action. Usually, this is the magazine capacity, but not always - for example, an SMLE rifle has a magazine of 10c(5), meaning that it can hold 10 rounds, but it loads 5 rounds per action.
The Treaty of
Versailles forbade Germany from developing tanks. However, by 1926
the German government had contracted with multiple manufacturers to
produce experimental heavy tanks, the Grosstraktor. By 1930, they
decided to also build a light machine-gun armed tank for training.

This training tank
would become the Panzer I. The initial production version had severe
limitations with an underpowered 59 horsepower engine prone to
overheating. The second production version (Ausf B) would upgrade to
a 100 horsepower engine. The lengthened engine deck led to an extra
road wheel being added. The fuel economy also improved somewhat, and
the Ausf A’s road range of 140 kilometers was improved to 170
kilometers.

In the Spanish Civil
War, the Ausf B was provided to Fascist forces. It served to
demonstrate that the machine-gun-only tank was undergunned on the
battlefield. In effect, it was a scaled-up tankette with no more
armor or firepower than the CV 35, which massed half as much. There
were experiments with fitting a 2cm gun into the Panzer I turret, but
it doesn’t seem to have seen any service during the Spanish Civil
War, and only 40 of the Ausf C with the 2 cm EW141 were produced.

As a training
vehicle, it was adequate, but it had no business being on a
battlefield. Germany would withdraw the Panzer I (except for
specialist vehicles built on its hull) in 1941.

The Italian
contribution to the Fascist incursion into Spain were the CV 33 and
CV 35 tankettes (CV standing for carro veloce, or
“fast car”). Tiny, lightly armored two-person vehicles
armed only with machineguns, they were the result of one of the
competing philosophies about armored vehicles in the 1920s and 30s
and indirect descendants of the Ford

As with most tankettes, it was quickly learned that
they were unsuited for any field where tanks prowled. The CV 33 was a
3 tonne vehicle introduced in 1933 and armed with a single 6.5mm gun,
while the CV 35 was introduced 2 years later and was slightly
heavier. With very slightly thicker armor (14mm versus 12mm) and a
pair of 8mm Breda guns replacing the single smaller FIAT, along with
a little more range, it was a quick way to transport light firepower,
but would be totally unsuited for the battlefields of the Second
World War. A total of 155 CV vehicles would be shipped to Spain
during the Civil War; I have not found an exact breakdown of how many
of each type were included.

Developed from John
Walter Christie’s designs, the BT series of tanks were the fastest
tanks in the Soviet garage.

The BT-1 was
Christie’s M1931. The first Soviet design, the BT-2, had paper-thin
armor but a 37mm gun and a copy of the American Liberty engine
providing high speeds. The BT-3 was the BT-2 with Imperial
measurements converted to metric, and the BT-4 only existed in
prototype form. The next major BT was the BT-5, which upgraded the
cannon from 37mm to the same 45mm as the T-26.

50 of the BT-5 would
see service with the Communist-supported Republicans in the Spanish
Civil War. At least half of them were lost, some being repair and put
into service by the Nationalists. After the war, the series would
continue development into the BT-7 and eventually the T-34.

While this vehicle could have its treads removed to allow faster road driving, I haven't modeled that since it was found to be useless in service because of the time needed to change modes.

Developed from the
British Vickers 6-ton tank, the Soviet T-26 was the USSR's standard
light tank of the 1930s. More than 11,000 were built over a decade.

The first two years' production were armed primarily with machine
guns in twin turrets; about 450 were armed with a DT in the left
turret and a 37mm L/22.7 “Gochkis” (Hotchkiss) cannon in the
right turret. Three prototypes of a command version with a 7N radio
(10 km range) were built, but did not enter production due to a
shortage of radios and the introduction of the single-turret T-26.
Tanks produced in 1931 have only a 182 liter fuel tank; the 290 liter
tank is introduced in 1932.

Starting in 1933, a
far more effective variant entered production, with a 45mm cannon.
Command tanks had a 71-TK-1 radio with a 15 kilometer range and a
rail antenna; in 1939 these were replaced with 71-TK-3 radios with a
less visible whip antenna. The tank had relatively thin armor, with a
maximum of 15mm on both hull and turret. In 1938, the original
cylindrical turret was replaced with a conical turret carrying 20mm
of armor. In 1939, a small number of T-26E (ekranirovanny or
“screened”) tanks were modified with an extra 30mm of applique
armor. Around 89 of these tanks were built. They weigh 12 tonnes,
have Maint: 6, and run a risk of blowing their engine if they go
above half speed.

281 T-26 model 1933
tanks would be sent to Spain during the Civil War. Another 82 were
sent to China (taking part in the Sino-Japanese War) and 60 to
Turkey. Captured tanks served with Finland, Germany, Romania, and
Hungary. Soviet tanks were used through the Second World War, last
seeing action in Machuria in 1945. The last tanks in use were Finnish
vehicles that served until 1961. During the battles of 1941-42, tanks
would have rough cut armor plate welded on them as improvised
improvements, so a tank during that war could have armor values
anywhere between 3 and 8.
