I was reminded recently that I had talked about providing examples of character conversion between Silhouette and Traveller. So, let's convert the Private Investigator (from DP9-101 Second Edition Heavy Gear Rulebook) to Mega and New Era.
So, what are we starting with?
Let's do MegaTraveller first, since that's the intermediary step to getting to New Era. Using the stat conversion system I wrote about last September, this character has a UPP of 777988. That's good for Life Force 21, Determination 16, and Experience 17.
The long list of skills provides this character with access to the Economic cascade, Tactics, Computer, Hand Combat cascade, either Tracked or Wheeled Vehicle, Interpersonal cascade, Forgery, Forensic, Legal, Recon, Gun Combat cascade, either Recon or Stealth, and Vice cascade.
From the Economic cascade, I go ahead and take Admin, since the PI will need to deal with cops. For both of the Hand Combat picks (one from Dodge and one from Hand-to-Hand), I go with Brawling. The Interpersonal pick is Interview (Liaison would also be a good choice). For Gun Combat, Handgun seems to fit the archetype the best. Since the character already has Recon, I pick Stealth when available, and the two Vice picks are split into a Bribery and a Streetwise, giving the following list of skills:
Admin 1, Brawling 2, Bribery 1, Computer 1, Forensic 2, Forgery 1, Interview 1, Handgun 1, Legal 1, Recon 2, Stealth 1, Streetwise 1, Tactics 1, Wheeled Vehicle 1.
For TNE, we'll use the MT stats to convert from. All core stats are reduced by 1, to a UPP of 666877. That give wound thresholds of 12/36/24, a mass of 80 kg for a male character and 65 kg for a female character, a load of 36 kg, and a throw distance of 24 meters.
Using Survival Margin, Admin and Legal combine into Admin/Legal, Brawling becomes Unarmed Martial Arts, Bribery and Computer convert over straight, Forensic becomes Investigation, Forgery and Interview convert straight, Handgun becomes Slug Weapon (Slug Pistol), Recon can convert to either Stealth or Tracking, Stealth and Streetwise convert straight, Tactics affects Initiative (see the skills post), and Wheeled Vehicle becomes Ground Vehicle (Wheeled). I'll put Recon to Tracking, since the character has Stealth, so TNE skills are:
Admin/Legal 3, Bribery 2, Computer 2, Forgery 2, Ground Vehicle (Wheeled) 2, Interview 2, Investigation 4, Slug Weapon (Slug Pistol) 2, Stealth 2, Streetwise 2, Tracking 4, Unarmed Martial Arts 4. They have Initiative 1d6-1 thanks to one level of Tactics, and unarmed damage is 2 based on Unarmed Martial Arts and Strength. With 29 skill levels, they're pretty highly skilled by TNE standards.
